Credit card payment failures occur throughout Japan... Is it a simple system error?
Currently, it is reported that credit card payments are temporarily suspended at 7-Eleven, supermarkets, and large stores throughout Japan.
Payments from major financial institutions such as Mitsubishi UFJ (MUFG) and Sumitomo Mitsui (SMBC) have also been affected, with some stores continuing to only accept cash payments.
At the same time, there are also notable movements.
● Ripple and SBI are expanding the use of the stablecoin RLUSD for retail payments within the regulatory framework.
● Circle is building a USDC payment infrastructure in collaboration with JCB, Japan's largest card payment network, and is working toward supporting digital dollar-based payments at approximately 40 million merchants.
This change is seen as an important trend to connect on-chain stablecoin payments to everyday commerce and overseas payments while leveraging existing credit card infrastructure.
However, no official evidence has been confirmed to date that this card payment failure in Japan is directly related to the introduction of Ripple, RLUSD, and USDC.
It is entirely possible that temporary system failure and digital payment transition are separate issues.
However, what is clear is that the global financial system is rapidly moving toward a new payment era centered on on-chain payments and stablecoins.
It is necessary to watch future announcements and follow-up situations to see whether this incident will end up as a simple technical failure or a signal in the process of digital financial transformation.
