Sounds strange, doesn't it?
Well, the "demo version" I'm referring to wasn't a Pi mining app or a blockchain testnet. Instead, it was the series of research projects conducted at Stanford University by Pi Network's two founders, Nicolas Kokkalis and Dr. Chengdiao Fan, years before Pi Network officially came to life.
While browsing for more information about the founders, I accidentally came across their profiles on DBLP (Digital Bibliography & Library Project).
DBLP is one of the world's most respected bibliographic databases in the field of Computer Science. It is not a scientific journal, but rather an academic index that catalogs researchers, conference papers, journal publications, and scholarly works.
And what surprised me was this...
As I traced the research history of Nicolas and Chengdiao, I noticed a remarkably logical progression of ideas:
🔹 2012 Research on helping people complete tasks more efficiently through AI and crowdsourcing.
🔹 2013 Research on enabling large-scale human communication while preserving personal interactions.
🔹 2017 Research on leveraging Social Capital transforming social networks and human relationships into meaningful value.
🔹 2019 Pi Network was launched with the vision of building a digital economy powered by the participation of millions of people.
What I found particularly interesting is that none of these research projects focused on Bitcoin, Ethereum, or blockchain itself.
Instead, the central question throughout their academic work was:
How can millions of people connect, collaborate, and create value together?
From this perspective, blockchain appears to have been a tool they later adopted to realize that vision, rather than the starting point of their research journey.
